220: X-Men Tier List (2002)

You know the drill. At the end of each year (ish) I make a new Tier List of each character and explain how the character has changed in my mind since the last time I did this. Feel free to check out my 1990, 1992 , 1993, Favorites as of 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, Favorites as of 2001, and 2001 lists.

S Tier

  • Emma - I giggle every time she's on panel.

  • Juggernaut - Never thought this would happen, but Austen has made him hella entertaining.

A Tier

  • Husk - Wow, Chuck Austen strikes again. I had no idea Paige Guthrie was going to be featured again so soon, but here she is and I'm digging it.

  • Jean - This year wasn't quite as a strong as the last, but she's still getting the attention she deserves

  • Cyclops - Also not as strong as that opening year, but his new personality and affair with Emma is pretty damn interesting.

  • Quentin Quire - He's probably not really an A list character, but I really liked the riot story arc, so sue me.

B Tier

  • Bishop - He's still doing his cop thing. Again, he's not as interesting as he was in the last tier, but not bad either.

  • Polaris - She's unhinged, but I'm interested.

  • Sage - Also not as a good as that first year, but still pretty solid.

  • Archangel - The first time I've ever really given two shits about him. Let's see if he can sustain it into 2003.

  • Xorn - I mean, the dude just looks cool

  • Fantomex - More of the Boba Fett appearl

  • Storm - Once again, not a great year, but not terrible.

  • Beak - His relationship with Angel is pretty entertaining.

C Tier

  • Beast - He didn't get much to do this year, but when we do see him I think they are doing a pretty good job with him. However, he seems to have left the NXM title and I haven't seen pop up elsewhere.

  • Angel - Her relationship with Beak is pretty entertaining.

  • Annie - A pretty strong new character. It's tough for a non mutant to crack this high.

  • Domino - She appeared in like one arc and an average miniseries, but she's here coasting on good vibes from my childhood.

  • Havok - He's not terrible. Let's see if he stays non terrible.

  • Lifeguard - Wasn't here for a long time, but she was here for a good time.

  • Northstar - Pretty fun that the lack of a comics code allows Austen to play around pretty directly with his sexuality.

  • Rogue - Still a great character, but dropped to C because she has an extended absence in 2002.

  • Stacy X - Lol, Jump ropes.

  • Wolverine - What a shame. He makes appearances in all three series plus an ongoing solo, but I can't say he's making much of an impact.

D Tier

  • Gambit - Lol, I just don't like him.

  • Nightcrawler - Chuck Austen is committing blue furry elf genocide.

  • Professor Xavier - Do I ever like him? Annoying that's walking again.

F Tier

  • Iceman - He's a regular character who is supposed to deliver comedic relief, but really he's just a joke.

  • Slipstream - Bruh.

  • Chamber - Barely here. Poor guy.

Favorite Comic Series

  1. Uncanny X-Men

    1. I just dodged a rotten tomato. Apparently this is controversial. Chuck Austen is entertaining me, ok!? It's definitely not better than New X-Men, but it certainly is entertaining

  2. New X-Men

    1. Still creating fantastic, epic content! That Quentin Quire riot arc was fantastic.

  3. X-Treme X-Men

    1. It's not terrible. I'm not considering giving up or anything, it's just clearly the 3rd best series.

  4. Special Mentions

    1. New Mutants V2, Mystique, and Emma Frost are all pretty good Limited Series that I'm glad I didn't give the skim treatment to.
