Synopsis
X-Infernus # 1 - 4: She's back!
Writer - C.B. Cebulski
Pencils - Giuseppe Camuncoli
Colossus is hot on the trail of Magik while bitter that Scott hasn’t been more helpful. Magik herself is hunting her lost Soulsword, amulet, and the scattered bloodstones needed to reclaim her soul. In Limbo, Belasco’s daughter, Witchfire, rallies demons to seize control of her father’s realm. A chaotic battle breaks when Pixie, losing control, stabs Nightcrawler and extracts Illyana’s Soulsword from his chest, with the Darkchylde appearing amidst the carnage.
Megan (Pixie) clashes with Illyana in a fierce confrontation. After securing the Soulsword, the Darkchylde reverts back into Illyana, though the toll of her transformation lingers across both mind and body.
The team (Colossus, Nightcrawler, Pixie, Wolverine, Santo, and Mercury) journey into Limbo after Illyana as Witchfire seemingly slays S’ym. Wolverine takes on a literal army of demons in a standout action moment. Magik faces off against Witchfire and is defeated, showcasing the severity of her foe.
Witchfire is able to complete the medallion and summon the Elder Gods by taking a second piece of Pixies soul, however Illyana turns the tide by using Mercury as a conduit to defeat Witchfire, reclaiming fragments of Pixie’s soul. Illyana decides to stay with the X‑Men rather than push away after the harrowing events.
The saga wraps with a victory that costs the team dearly, but it reinforces bonds and sets narrative groundwork for the New Mutants’ mission.
New Mutants Vol. 3 # 1- 4: Return of the Legion
Writer - Zeb Wells
Pencils - Diogenes Neves
Magik arrives at the school, and most of the Academy X crew tells her to buzz off until Sam and Roberto defend her. They are pissed about the last time they were summoned to Limbo. Illyana warns that Dani and Shan are in danger, prompting tension and mystery. Magik attempts to heal a blind Empath whom Pixie’s soul sword left wounded, showcasing guilt and responsibility. Sam and Berto encounter Legion, a massively unstable mutant whose multiple personalities are wreaking havoc. It’s a tense reunion of New Mutants heavyweights, with Magik’s return at the emotional center.
Legion’s personalities have overtaken both Shan and a young girl, causing collateral damage and chaos wherever they switch. Each personality manifests distinct powers and threatens innocents, underscoring the danger Legion poses.
One of Legion’s old personas, Jack Wayne, attempts to kill Dani, yet fails because she’s locked safely away behind bars. Sam leaves her there for safety, angering Dani as personalities wrestle for control. With thousands jockeying to dominate his body (often symbolized by a stuffed animal), Illyana dives into Legion’s mindscape — cutting through personalities with her magic sword.
Sam tells Dani bluntly to run and survive, not pretend she’s untouchable. Surprisingly, Dani obeys and escapes. A spectacular fight breaks out as Legion’s personalities display wildly varying powers. At the last minute, Dani returns in a car to save the team. Meanwhile, Illyana slays many of Legion’s personas, frees the true David, and rescues Shan, winning the internal battle with grit and sword.
The arc ends on a high note of teamwork, growth, and actual salvation for both Legion and the New Mutants.
My Connections and Creators
Boring or Great?
Guys! She's back! Magik's back. You know what else is back? The original New Mutants. The last new Mutants revival was great, but it featured the next teir of New Mutants. This one actually brings back the original group and it just makes me giddy. The story was a pretty good one too with the return of Legion. I'm always fascinated when he shows up, maybe because I loved the show.
Thoughts on Art
Camuncoli’s gritty, demonic design in X‑Infernus gives Limbo a visceral, chaotic tone that elevates the mystical conflict. Neves’ work on New Mutants contrasts with cleaner action and expressive emotional beats, especially in Legion’s mindscape sequences.
Things to keep an eye on
Is MAGIK REALLY BACK!?
Will Sam and Dani stay as co-leaders?
Is Legion part of the ensemble now or was just part of an isolated arc?
Will Rahne come back or is she entrenched on X-Force, having already left X-Factor suddenly?
Let's start the timer until Dani gets her powers back. I'm going to guess she gets them back through some sort of Divine Intervention.
