Synopsis

X-Factor V3 # 1 - 4: Decimation

Writer - Peter David

Pencils - Ryan Sook, Dennis Calero

We begin with Rictor on a ledge, considering jumping off a building. He's depressed that he's not a mutant anymore. He talks (reminiscent of Storm) about how he used to be able to feel the earth. Rahne (Wolfsbane) starts yelling at him from the ground about suicide being a sin. Jamie Madrox (the Multiple Man) is up on the roof with him, trying to talk him down. Eventually he does take a spill after one of Jamie's dupes pushes him, but Monet catches him.

Siryn (Theresa) has a witness shot in front of her. She can modulate her voice to get ppl to adore her.

Jamie won on “ Who wants to be a millionaire?” and expanded X-Factor Investigations. Jamie isn’t sure if he’s had sex recently. He has a hard time remembering which memories are his and which ones are his dupes.

Layla keeps predicting the future herself. Layla Miller says her job is to stop XF from finding out the truth about House of M, which they are investigating.

A client, Gloria Santiago, asked XF to investigate her sister that was sleeping with a movie star. Later, Gloria kills her sister. Gloria claims she doesn’t remember killing her sister. M scans Gloria’s mind, realized the actor accidentally killed Gloria’s sister, then used Singularity to re-program her mind. M makes the actor admit what he did

Guido (Strong Guy), Rictor, and Rahne (Wolfsbane) come across a mob (The Reals) attacking de-powered mutants.

Singularity investigations, the villainous corporation rivaling X-Factor Investigations, has an old man who can see the future, but he is interrupted by Layla Miller (who we'll see a lot more of later on). The son (Junior) of Singularity has super strength and later beats up Siryn (or at least that's what her led to believe at this point).

X-Factor V3 # 5-6: Siryn's Beating

Writer - Peter David

Pencils - Dennis Calero

50 is a One shot issue about Siryn. Siryn being chained up, after being beaten up, by a de-powered and deranged mutant (supposedly). Rictor shows up and saves her. Layla goes back to an orphanage, but Rahne and MM get her back. They were both orphans too.

My Connections, Creators, and Characters

So here we are, the return of Peter David to X-Factor! I've been looking forward to this for quite some time. Peter David's got that comical edge to his prose which works great with characters like Jamie Madrox (Multiple Man) and Guido (Strong Guy), but I'm interested to see how it mixes with characters who typically play it straight like Rahne (Wolfsbane) or M (Monet).

David's also had a little bit of "Fuck you, editors" in his work, which makes me a bit surprised that so much of the theme is tied to House of M (an editorially mandated event). I guess it would be impossible to ignore it, but a part of me is disappointed. Layla Miller is a character plucked right out of House of M and inserted into this comic. This does make a bit nervous, but I'm pretty intrigued by her so we'll see where this goes.

I love when writer's go out and handpick which characters they want to bring in from those who aren't being used much at the moment. Siryn's always been a solid character and she has a romantic relationship with Jamie stretching all the way back to the Fallen Angels (Read more in "47: NM 52 - 61 (Louise Simonson and the Death of Cypher)") miniseries (even though it ended up being a dupe), however she started to get a little grating near the tail end of the X-Force run.

Monet is in here and while she's rarely used in this opening six issues, I loved her from Generation X and am thrilled that she'll get more focus. Oh and Rictor walks in on Monet singing “I’m too sexy…” That was fun.

Wolfsbane is a character I could not be less excited about, however I'm very interested to see Peter David handles her since he does great with individual character work. Hell, David's small scale pschiatrist issue is still my 5th favorite X-men comic of all time. Rictor is a little boring, especially now that he's de-powered, but he does have a romantic past with Rahne so we'll see where that takes us.

One of the things I am most excited for this in this series is a deeper dive into Jamie Madrox and the unique qualities of his powers. For instance, there is a point where he comments on how he isn't sure how long it's been since he last had sex because he has a hard time remembering which memories are his and which ones are his dupes. David also seems to be taking the angle that each dupe is a different aspect of his personality, with being fearful of certain versions (like the one that popped up during his miniseries).

Singularity investigations, this villainous corporation rivaling X-Factor Investigations, is a little lame but I'll give it some time...

Overall, I liked these first 6 issues but I didn't love them. I plan on giving the series a long leash, so it's not like I'm giving up any time soon, but I was hoping for a bit more. I also don't love the art.

My Rating- 7/10
