Synopsis
New X-Men (Academy X) V2 # 28 - 31: Nimrod
Writer - Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost
Pencils - Paco Medina, Duncan Rouleau (29)
As tensions rise between mutants and the world around them, tragedy strikes when Iron Man and Carol Danvers discover a massacre at the hands of Nimrod, the deadly mutant-hunting machine—including the death of Jay Guthrie. Carol attempts to console the New X-Men but also pressures them to register under the Superhuman Registration Act. Emma Frost, however, refuses to back down, condemning the Avengers for their absence and emphasizing that this bloodshed is the cost of being too visible.
Meanwhile, Nimrod forces Forge into a devastating dilemma, threatening Storm’s life unless he repairs him. To ensure compliance, Nimrod shows Forge a future where he and Storm have a family—one that Nimrod would not hesitate to destroy. At the same time, David tries to warn Cyclops about Nimrod's return, but Cyclops dismisses him and leaves for Storm's wedding, unaware of the danger brewing.
The truth emerges: this Nimrod is from an alternate future, and Forge, forced into compliance, builds him a new body—one with a hidden subroutine designed to protect mutants. As the New X-Men battle waves of smaller Nimrods, chaos erupts. An explosion nearly kills them, but Julian saves the team, while Rockslide sacrifices himself to protect Julian—only to later reform.

In the climactic battle, X-23 slices Nimrod open, Mercury holds him in place, and Surge overloads his time-travel mechanism. Though they succeed in forcing Nimrod back to Uncanny X-Men #192, he retaliates by blasting Laura, severely burning her and halting her healing factor. Desperate, Emma taps into Julian’s mind, pushing him into hyperdrive to rush Laura back to the mansion at Mach 3. Elixir manages to heal her, but in doing so, undergoes a dramatic transformation, shifting his appearance from black back to gold.
With Nimrod defeated and their own struggles leaving scars both physical and emotional, the New X-Men are left to grapple with the cost of survival in a world that refuses to protect them.
Cable & Deadpool # 28 - 29: The Domino Principle
Writer - Fabian Nicieza
Pencils - Reilly Brown (28), Ron Lim (29)
In the turbulent nation of Rumekistan, chaos reigns as two mercenaries with a complicated history find themselves on opposite sides of a deadly mission. Deadpool is hired to assassinate the country’s dictator, the ruthless Flag-Smasher, while Domino is tasked with preventing the assassination. As their conflicting objectives lead to an inevitable clash, fate takes a sharp turn—Domino, not Deadpool, is the one who ultimately kills Flag-Smasher. But the real twist? The new leader of Rumekistan is none other than Cable himself.
As Cable assumes control, the truth behind the nation’s supposed resistance emerges: the leader of the movement was actually Citizen V, a shadowy figure with his own agenda. With Rumekistan’s future in the balance, Domino finds herself questioning whether she can truly trust Cable, despite their shared past. As tensions rise and alliances blur, one thing becomes clear—Cable’s vision for the world is growing, and not everyone is ready to follow him.
New Excalibur # 10 - 12: The Last Days of Camelot
Writer - Frank Tieri
Pencils - Michael Ryan
When Captain Britain calls upon the Black Knight (Dane Whitman) for aid, he doesn’t expect an ancient force to awaken. Dane becomes possessed by his ancestor—the original Black Knight—setting off a chain of events that pulls New Excalibur into a battle for history itself.
The team is thrust back in time to the days of Camelot, where tensions run high. Pete
Wisdom struggles to assert authority, but his teammates find his attempts laughable, deferring instead to Captain Britain’s natural leadership. Meanwhile, Sage revels in the rare opportunity to be “unplugged” from constant data analysis, though that doesn’t stop Pete from shamelessly flirting with her. Elsewhere, Nocturne (TJ) calls out Juggernaut, forcing him to confront his unspoken feelings for Dazzler.
As the team navigates the past, the Ebony Blade's corruption proves more potent than ever, taking hold of Henry faster than it did Dane Whitman. Dark magic runs rampant, and soon, the team finds themselves facing an army of dragons—beasts revealed to be the descendants of the legendary Fin Fang Foom. Amid the chaos, hints of a romantic entanglement between Sage and Pete add further intrigue to the mission.
With time itself at stake, New Excalibur must overcome both external threats and their own internal conflicts before history is irreparably altered.
My Connections and Creators
Boring or Great?
New X-Men (Academy X) # 28 - 31 had a fine 4 issue Mark. Not great, but not bad either. I find it pretty damn interesting that Kyle and Yost decided to randomly bring Forge's love for Storm into this arc while Marvel is busy celebrating Storm's marriage to Black Panther. I'm pretty impressed with how this arc directly tied into UXM # 192, making everything come full circle.
Cable & Deadpool: The Domino Principle simply makes me wish that Domino had a permanent home. She'll show up almost simultaneously in the X-Men Civil War story too. Once again, I have had a little too much of Messiah Cable so him taking over another country in his typically arrogant way is a bit too much for me.
New Excalibur's "The Last Days of Camelot" was a chore to get through. One positive I'll mention is that I enjoyed hearing Sage talk about how it was nice to be unplugged from technology while she was in the past.
Things to keep an eye on
I'll be watching to see if anything else happens between Forge and Storm, however I highly doubt it. I still feel "uncomfortable" about how the original Academy X team was decimated and this series has a completely different (darker) tone. I was trying to convince my 11 year old daughter to read these comics, but now I've stopped pushing for that. New Excalibur is getting a little too close to joining the list of issues I give up on, but since the whole series only has 24 issues, I'll see it through to the end.
